We pride ourselves on the experience of our physical therapists and athletic trainers. Our staff has dealt with athletes for over 20 years at various levels of competition. From international top athletes to the weekend warrior we have been able to take them to the limit. For an athlete it is a priority to resume sport activities quickly and performing at their previous level or better.
We offer aggressive and challenging treatment plans along with advice on safely returning to sport activities, injury prevention and performance enhancement, in order to achieve the goals required by an athlete.
Over the years we have established excellent relationships with many prominent orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists in Oakland County. Besides the fact that they refer patients to us, we can facilitate consultation with specialists for our patients if needed.
Physical therapy can speed up the recovery form sprains by early intervention. Hands-on techniques in combination with electrotherapy and ultrasound treatment will decrease the initial swelling and pain faster than just rest, ice, compression, elevation, and splinting. This minimizes the risk of joint contractures, muscle atrophy and deconditioning. Another advantage of early physical therapy intervention in the acute injury phase is that possibly more severe conditions to joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles are detected sooner and referred to a specialist if required.
Often aches and pains are ignored by athletes and are considered a “normal” part of an active lifestyle. When activities are continued with pain or discomfort the risk of chronic inflammation increases. Physical therapy can offer treatment for those with tendinitis, bursitis or any other recurring pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system with sport activities.
If surgery is indicated most patients will require a well designed treatment plan which will guide them to a safe recovery taking priority in preserving the surgical area. A physical therapist’s expertise is required to safely and gradually increase the activity level. The most common conditions are the ACL reconstructions, rotator cuff repairs and the rehabilitation after arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder and knee. We are familiar with the post-operative protocols and assure compliance with the treatment plan recommended by the surgeon.
Over the past years we have provided Waterford high schools with athletic training services. We are proud that in May of 2004, Functional Physical Therapy was presented an achievement recognition award by the superintendent of Waterford schools for the excellent management of their athletic program.
Our name says it all. We strive to do more than get you back on your feet, back on the field, or back to work. Our objective is to restore and enhance your body’s functionality so that you can live the life you want to live.
We do that by understanding how the various parts of your body, such as your muscles, your bones, and your nervous system work together. This allows us to develop innovative, personalized therapy programs that recognize this interaction and seek to maximize collective system performance.
